Choice Words

Peel me some words,
Fat juicy ones
From ancient vines
With layers and depth
And some new ones,
Just planted,
Still a bit tart.
Peel me some words
And pop them in my mouth.

Total Eclipse (August 21)

woodcut by Mary Brodbeck
Advertising postcard for Mary Brodbeck show

Season shift, smelled before felt,
Different blossoms, wet dirt, something
Leaves at the top of the Juneberry look copper
And silver maples show red. Birds quiet
Waiting for the eye of the world to close.
Murmuring TV voices say it will open again
And the world will be unchanged.

But winter will still arrive.
