The Tree

woman looking out window
Watercolor painting

She lies on her bed and watches the tree sway in the wind
The sunlight move from one side to the other
Then stars, missing from the sky
Behind the shape of the big tree. She has nowhere to go
And moving is hard
And she planted that tree.

Climbing the Dune

Very steep large sandune
NPS postcard

Leaning in to the steepest part,
Sliding back as much as going up,
Sand crumbling underfoot, reaching out
For a handful of slippery nothing,
Laughing at the slide, then climb again,
Because, well, that’s what you do.
And sooner, but probably later,
All will come slipping and climbing over the top
Still laughing.
